What is Soda Fired? The soda firing technique requires that clay and glazes inside the kiln have reached approximately 2350 degrees F. At this point, soda ash is introduced into the firing chamber. The vapors of the soda ash react with the materials in the clay and glazes creating astonishing results, beautiful textures with an array of colors reminiscent of polished stones. Because of the nature of the firing process, each urn will always be unique. During the firing, to prevent sticking to the shelf, the urns are lifted on the kiln shelves with seashells or clay wadding. The resulting mark is where a wad or a seashell was used.
