Cremation Jewelry: All the Rage or Fashion Faux Pas

Memorial jewelry, jewelry worn to commemorate a lost loved one, dates back to ancient Rome, but historians suspect the practice is far more ancient. There’s a strong likelihood that many of the jewels people wore long before the world’s first cities were built were actually memorial jewels too. Such jewels were made from bone, hair, and even blood. Consequently, today’s cremation jewelry is not a new trend, but rather, the pinnacle of an ancient tradition that predates the construction of cathedrals, roads, and possibly even the invention of the wheel!

What Is Cremation Jewelry?

Today’s cremation jewelry is stylistically diverse, but it’s always worn as a means to cherish a loved one who has passed away. People wear cremation jewelry to honor a lost parent, sibling, friend, or even a pet. Losing a loved one may be part of life, but the grief can be difficult–even overwhelming. Wearing a cremation jewel often helps people to feel closer to their lost loved one.

Ashes Jewelry
Jewelry To Hold Ashes

Cremation jewelry is made to hold ashes inside or actual diamonds and crystals that are made from the ashes of a loved one. Pendants remain the most popular cremation jewels, but rings, earrings, and bracelets are worn too. In fact, Pandora-style cremation beads have become a popular cremation jewelry trend. But is wearing cremation jewelry fashionable? Is it the right fashion choice for you?

Fashionable or Gloomy?

Ashes inside pendantJewelry trends come and go, but memorial jewelry is a centuries-old tradition that has outlasted trends and the fickle whims of fashion. Many people love wearing their cremation jewelry because it helps them feel close to their loved one; wearing the tangible essense of a loved one has special meaning for them and gives them comfort each time they wear their jewel.

It’s true that some people might not feel comfortable wearing cremation jewelry or like the idea of creating a jewel from the ashes of a loved one. People have different ideas about death and how best to grieve or how best to honor their loved one. Others choose to bury their loved one’s ashes or hold a special ceremony before sprinkling the ashes in a special spot. Some people choose to use the ashes to create special objects like glass paperweights or some other work of art.

Cremation Jewelry ‘Looks’ Like Fashionable Jewelry

Whether the cremation jewelry trend appeals to your sense of fashion or not, the jewelry actually looks like traditional or contemporary jewels. A diamond made from a loved one’s ashes sparkles like a diamond. The fact is, no one looking at your jewelry would know that it contains or is made from a loved one’s ashes unless you tell them. Outwardly, the jewelry can reflect all kinds of styles because it comes in a myriad of designs. However, the wearer knows–and that’s what’s most important. For them, their cremation jewel is special in a way that few jewels are.

Cremation Jewelry Transcends Fashion Trends

Cremation jewelry isn’t about fashion trends–although, it’s true that many of the jewels reflect today’s most fashionable designs. The main reason people wear these jewels is to feel connected to their lost loved one, which is always more important than a style trend or current mode of fashion. If you want to feel that daily connection, a cremation jewel might be right for you. You might also want to buy cremation jewelry for other members of your family who are grieving their loved one as well.

An Expression of Love

LoveWhen a loved one passes, love doesn’t die. Wearing a cremation jewel is a way to express that lasting connection. In a time when people are struggling to feel unified, a cremation jewel helps them feel close to the person they love. The jewel becomes a symbol of their love and gives them a measure of peace each time they wear it. People also love the fact that they can personalize their cremation jewel. They can choose colors, metals, and styles.

About Our Cremation Jewelry Process

At Cremation Solutions, our custom service team is often asked how we keep each order’s ashes separate on custom jewelry orders. This concern is, naturally, at the heart of our cremation jewelry process. Maintaining the integrity of each kit we receive is our priority, so we’ve created a process that keeps each kit and its ash separate with a specially assigned number associated with the name of the deceased. Your loved ones’ ashes will never come into contact with anyone’s else’s. It often happens that our artisans may not need the entire amount of ash that they are sent in the kit. In these cases, we will mail the excess ash amount back with your order along with your jewel.

Covid Drives Creative Cremation Memorials

Planning funerals and memorials has been difficult during the year of COVID-19. Restrictions placed on gatherings has limited traditional ways to grieve, while technology has opened new pathways. Take a look at some of the ways memorials have changed in the past year — and some creative solutions.

Funeral Changes During Covid

You want to memorialize your loved ones and gather to celebrate their lives — but that’s hard when your state makes it impossible to gather in large groups. As a result, many funeral directors have had to pivot and learn how to live stream funerals. You can expect to attend more live-streamed memorial services in the future, as many people appreciate the ability to pay their respects without having to incur travel time and costs.

Another big change? Cremations have more than increased dramatically during the past year. This occurred for many reasons. Funeral homes often didn’t have the capacity to store remains until families could gather for funerals, and some people feared that they would be exposed to COVID-19 through their deceased loved ones or those in attendance. In addition, as people counted their pennies through the pandemic, they began to realize the considerable cost advantages of commemorating a loved one’s life through cremation rather than burial. So many have simply put the memorial gathering on hold until it is ok to travel and gather. The lack of ritual has caused survivors to yearn for a connection and reach for physical ways to memorialize the lost loved one. Cremation memorials are a solution to this gap in tradition.

Cremation Solutions Bring Creativity to Your Memorials

Loved One LauncherCremation allows so many creative ways to memorialize a loved one. That’s where we come in. At Cremation Solutions, we create innovative art and jewelry that provides you with a unique way to remember and treasure your loved one. Our personalized cremation urns are designed to preserve special memories. Take a look at some of the on trendy ways to commemorate your loved one.

Glass Keepsakes And Jewelry

Cremation GlassGlass has a sense of the eternal to it because of the way we see through it or see ourselves reflected in it. And glass shares something with cremation — both involve extremely high temperatures. Our artisans take this opportunity to turn grief into something truly beautiful.

Glass Sculpture with Cremation AshesBecause molten glass requires temperatures over 2000°F, far hotter than most cremations, our artists are able to incorporate cremation ashes into the molten glass as an artwork is in progress. The carbon from the ashes burns off at this ultra high temperature, leaving behind brilliant white ashes incorporated right into the glass keepsakes and jewelry with infused ashes. Crystalized glass can even be cut into brilliant gem style of high end jewelry!

Fingerprint Jewelry

Thumbies KeepsakesWhat’s more unique than your fingerprint? Drawing on this, we create absolutely one-of-a-kind necklaces, charms, and pendants that feature your loved one’s fingerprint, so you can hold their identity close to your heart. Of course we keep all fingerprints completely secure.

These unusual keepsakes are also ideal to capture special moments such as the birth of a baby, a wedding, or a special bond between two people. We can incorporate birthstones into the finger jewelry and offer a range of designs to help you begin your own family tradition. And yes, we can make this unique jewelry using the paw print or even the nose print of your cherished pet.

Pandora-style Cremation Jewelry

Beads made with ashesIf you already love your Pandora bracelet or necklace with its delightful charms that show off who you are and what you love, now you can add your loved ones to the mix. At Cremation Solutions, we make Pandora-style beads that you can add to your existing jewelry to include your loved ones as part of the story of your life.

Choose from a gold or sterling silver beat that holds a small amount of your loved one’s ashes, discreetly sealed with a tungsten/stainless steel countersunk screw. Or add some colorful beauty with a custom-made glass bead that holds a tiny amount of your loved one’s ashes, seamlessly infused into the glass during its creation. Either way, you can carry your loved one with you everywhere you go.

Cremation Monuments

Monuments For Cremation
Examples of cremation monuments for the yard or garden. These rock solid memorials will keep your loved one’s ashes safe and secure from the elements.

If you want to honor your loved one in a more traditional way, perhaps as part of a family memorial at your local cemetery, you may want to consider our cremation headstones, niches, columbaria, and other memorials. These customized monuments hold your loved one’s cremated ashes or urns inside with a sense of dignity and permanence. Choose handsome monuments with plenty of space for you to write a special commemorative message, or opt for hollowed out boulders that return your loved one to nature in a beautiful, organic way.

The Loved One Launcher Ash-Scattering Cannon

If the loved one you’re celebrating went through life making a strong impression, say farewell with the same kind of zest they showed throughout their life. The Loved One Launcher is a powerful and joyous way to express the impact someone had on your life, and it’s ideal for life celebration parties surrounding someone who evoked love and laughter in your circle of friends.

With the Loved One Launcher, instead of passively scattering ashes on the ground, you can shoot them 70′ into the air — accompanied by confetti and streamers, if you like. This robust ash-scattering cannon creates a beautiful spectacle that can only make you smile even as you mourn your loss.

Scattering Urns

Turn your ash-scattering ceremony into something very special with an urn that fits the personality of your loved one and that you can leave behind. If you’re scattering ashes at sea or in a body of water, we have special urns that float beautifully and then biodegrade with no harm to the environment.

The Beauty of Blown Glass

Glass blowing is an incredibly challenging discipline, requiring patience, skill, and attention to detail to execute properly. Each Cremation Solutions piece is handmade specifically to your order, ensuring a custom creation carrying a little piece of someone you love and cherish.

In order to create blown glass pieces, our artisans start with a crucible of hot liquid glass. This glass is then gathered on the end of a hollow steel blow pipe, and then rolled on a hard metal table to create a smooth, rounded shape. In order to keep the glass hot and malleable, the craftsman will continue to place the blow pipe into a roaring furnace.

To shape and expand the glass, the artist will physically blow into the end of the pipe. If necessary, powders, glass sticks, and other elements can be incorporated into the design to add color, texture, and shape. Glass can also be pulled and sculpted with the use of tongs and other tools.

Throughout this process, the cremation ashes you provide to us will be added to the glass piece, incorporating the spirit of your loved one into your handmade creation. Blown glass requires a temperature of over 2000 degrees, higher than that of initial cremation. This extreme heat burns off all carbon deposits, leaving brilliant white ashes that are spread throughout the glass.

Ashes in Turtle glass
Turtles are some of the oldest creatures on earth. The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, known as “Honu,” symbolizes good luck, endurance and long life. Turtles can show up as a person’sguardian spirit, known as “Aumakua.” ornaments, paperweights, decorative flowers, sculptures, and other keepsakes, providing the perfect fit for whatever you envision.

Once a piece is finished, it will be transported to a 960 degree oven. Over the course of the next 14 to 24 hours, the oven temperature will drop, allowing the blown glass to cool naturally without the risk of cracking or warping.

Cremation Jewelry Going Mainstream

Ashes Jewelry
New Pandora Styled Cremation Jewelry

Funerary art and jewelry have played a strong role in commemorating the loss of a loved one throughout history. Memorial jewelry initially gained popularity because there weren’t many alternatives for remembrance; photography didn’t exist and there weren’t a lot of options for tangible mementos. While many technological advances are available to our society today, memorial or cremation jewelry continues to be popular as a very personal and meaningful way to hold on to connections to those who have passed. As this ancient tradition continues and even grows in popularity today, Cremation Solutions is happy to offer a wide array of cremation jewelry and customized services that turn a small amount of your loved one’s ashes into an heirloom creation that you can wear close to your heart forever.

Preserve Your Connection

During the Victorian period it was common for people to save small locks of their loved ones’ hair within jewelry like lockets. This practice has never gone out of style and it likely never will. People will forever mourn the loss of a loved one just as they hope to celebrate the wonderful aspects of their loved ones’ lives. Cremation jewelry helps people remember that connection, and helps to reinforce that the love shared will never truly be gone from their lives.

Types of Cremation Jewelry

There are various types of cremation jewelry that suit a wide range of budgets and style preferences. From colorful beads and charms to elegant pendants and more, we’re sure you’ll find something special to commemorate a loved one. We even often a selection for pets who have passed on. In addition, commemorative jewelry makes a meaningful gift for family members, who will appreciate having something to treasure that reflects the pure essence of their loved one.

Cremation Solutions offers three primary types of cremation jewelry:

  • Custom-made jewelry (such as glass and ceramic pieces) where the ashes are infused into the material during creation to become a permanent part of the piece.
  • Cremation crystals and diamonds actually made from the natural elements of the ashes.
  • Jewelry designed to be easily filled by the customer directly. Each piece has a hollow chamber into which a very small amount of ashes can be added.

Glass Artists Are Creating Art with Cremation Ashes

Art Made From AshesGlass memorial tributes — an art that was just recently featured on the Today Show — are beautiful, custom, one-of-a-kind keepsakes and jewelry that will be cherished for generations to come.  This jewelry and these glass keepsakes are carefully hand-crafted with the incorporation of the cremation ashes of your loved one or beloved pet by highly-skilled and talented glass artists.  Glass memorial tributes are a wonderful way to honor your lost loved one or pet.

Glass memorial tributes are available in both recycled and non-recycled glass, with the recycled glass counterparts being made in an emerald green shade and the non-recycled glass made in a wider variety of beautiful jewel tone colors.  However, both are equally stunning and beautiful.  Easily select a preset keepsake style color combination or create your own unique custom color with different color combinations and styles.

Art Made With AshesHow Glass Memorial Art is Created

Glass memorial art keepsakes and jewelry are hand-blown and then carefully and skillfully sculpted right here in the United States by skilled glass artists and then hand-signed.  During this process, glass is heated to temperatures reaching well over 2000 degrees, melting it into a molten glass state.

When glass is molten, as it cools it is plastic-like and shape-able.  Once the glass is in a molten state, the ashes of your loved one are then carefully incorporated into the glass.  Because the molten glass is hotter than the ashes, carbon is burned off, which then in turn turns the ashes into a brilliantly white color within the glass.

After the sculpture is artistically made, it is then put into an annealer to cool down.  Cool-down generally takes over 12-48 hours and will vary depending upon your memorial tribute’s size.

Cremations Solutions Keepsakes and Jewelry

Ashes inside JewelryGlass cremation jewelry is available CremationSolutions.com in a wide-variety of glass cremation pendants and each pendant is made with a small amount of cremation ashes.  Pendants are available in the Cross Pendant, available in four colors; the Helix Pendant, available in four colors; the Loving Memory Hearts, available in eight colors; the Precious Metals Heart – Gold, available in eight colors; the Precious Metals Heart – Silver, available in eight colors; the Rhombic Pendant, available in four colors; and the Swirling Galaxy Memory, available in six styles.

Keepsakes are available in the Embrace Orb, the Galaxy Orb, the Swirl Orb and the Keepsake Heart.  You have the option of choosing two beautiful colors for the inside of the cremation urn glass.  Colors that you’ll choose from include: eternal purple, sea-foam aqua, sky blue, ocean blue, forever green, antique red, perfect pink, radiant orange, everlasting gold, apricot/marmalade, daffodil yellow, slate grey, mystic black, ivory white, aged bronze or a simple crystal clear.

Ashes Globe
Shown With "Wave Wrap"

When customizing your keepsake, you have the option of also including a wrap for your urn in the color of your choice.  The wrap will then become a permanent part of your urn and cannot be removed later.  You can also put the globe on a stand. The stands have an led light that adds a warm glow to your keepsake globe.  Choose one of two mahogany stands.  Each stand is hand-crafted and will include a brass plaque for two lines of engraving.

How the Order Process Works

To order, simply go on our website and select the keepsake or jewelry that you wish to order.  Cremation Solutions will then send you a kit to collect and saftly send us the right amount of ashes. You might be worried about sending something so precious through the mail as cremation ashes, but rest assured that all orders are tracked from the time that they leave your hands at the post office to the time that your final piece arrives to you. The records for that label are then kept in a company database and these records accompany each and every order throughout the entire creation process of your keepsake or jewelry.  Ensuring that you, your loved one and the memorial that is being created for you in their honor is treated with the utmost respect and care.

On January 4, 2012, an extraordinary Buddhist wedding ceremony transpired in Surin, Thailand. On that day 28-year-old Chadil Deffy, a television director also known as Deff Yingyuen, took his girlfriend of ten years, 29-year-old Sarinya Kamsook, also known as Anne, as his wife.

Death Till We Part?

The bridegroom, clad in a black tuxedo complete with top hat and tails, was debonair and charming. The bride was a vision in a white satin strapless bridal gown featuring a miniskirt and ornamented with lace and pearls. Fishnet stockings embellished her legs, and in her hands, she held a red and white bridal bouquet.

The bride remained silent and did not object to the marriage. As the groom proclaimed his undying love for his bride, he slipped a diamond ring on her finger as a symbolic representation of his eternal love. This touching and endearing demonstration of everlasting love broadcasted on nationwide television in Thailand.

The unconventional issue concerning this romantic and charming marriage ceremony was not the bride’s unusual attire. Instead, it was the undeniable fact that the wedding ceremony had taken place posthumously and that the new bride was actually deceased at the time that the consolidated marriage/funeral service occurred.  The groom purportedly betrothed her out of tremendous despair and remorse.

In a typical love scenario, the happy couple became acquainted with each other and fell in love a decade earlier at Eastern Asia University in Thailand. The couple had previously planned to get married, but had postponed the wedding repeatedly because of their hectic schedules. Yingyuen had been pre-occupied with completing his degree and Kamsook was focusing on her career.

Regrettably, destiny intervened. On January 3, 2012, the couple found themselves in an automobile accident that resulted in catastrophic injuries to Anne. She was then rushed to an overcrowded emergency room of a nearby hospital. Rather than sending her to an alternative hospital that would be able to treat her injuries immediately, the workers reportedly waited six hours to attend to her, during which time she succumbed to her injuries and perished.

Jewelry To AshesThe matter at hand is whether the groom was a truly a grieving sweetheart, or rather an opportunist searching for a claim to fame. The bridegroom who had the ceremony videotaped also uploaded it to the social networking website Facebook, where he entitled the video, Corpse Bride. Subsequently, he published the video to YouTube where it ultimately proceeded to go viral.

Despite the fact that it’s apparent that he regretted that he had not married the woman he dearly loved while she was still living, his ulterior motives for videotaping the ceremony remain ambiguous. Tremendous grief can make people do abnormal things, but to use a publicity stunt to benefit from the demise of a loved one is excessive.

Regardless of the indisputable fact that he kept his commitment to his bride, he would potentially have been better thought of if this had been a private display rather than a televised event. Irrespective of his motives, from this fiasco you will discover lessons that we all can gain knowledge from. Our lives are way too short, and we should never delay until tomorrow what we could do today. Tomorrow could be too late, as this young man has learned all too well.

Kamsook’s burial occurred immediately following the ceremony and students carefully placed death wreaths throughout the grounds of the university that the couple attended in honor of the deceased bride. On the upside, a couple of things relating to this union are certain. The bride and groom will never argue, and if things don’t work out, the groom won’t be required to hand over half of his possessions.

This particular wedding is a perfect illustration of why funeral planning is so crucial. The bride undoubtedly would not have desired to have her deceased body exhibited for the entire world. However, if your loved ones don’t know what you want, despair and grieving can lead to unconventional funeral arrangements.

Many people these days are opting for cremation over burial. Cremation services offer family members additional time to organize the funeral service or memorial service. With additional time to prepare you can notify more family members, which frequently generates a significantly better turnout for the funeral.

Cremation urns for ashes are an excellent way to keep your loved one with you as you safeguard their earthly remains. In exactly the same way, cremation jewelry for ashes, which is either filled with the ashes or made from the ashes of your loved one, is an excellent solution for keeping your loved one in close proximity to your heart.

Aquitted of Murder Cassie Anthony Now Wears A Cremation Jewelry Pendant

This Thursday People magazine will release a story called “The Strange and Lonely Life of Casey Anthony”.

Cassie and Caylee in Happier Times

It will be a year since Casey was acquitted of murdering her daughter, two year old Caylee. The article talks about her boring life living in seclusion surfing the internet and checking on her most hated women in America status. She now lives in West Palm Beach Florida were she serves a year on probation for check fraud. According to a friend she has gained twenty lbs from inactivity and eats allot. She plans on leaving the country when her probation is complete. Apparently enough bleeding hearts have sent her donations to live on and she lives with a sugar daddy she calls Pop’s.

So why are we writing about Casey on our Cremation Solutions blog!. Apparently Last year Casey and her mother Cindy reconciled via skype. While Casie was in jail, Caylee was cremated and Cindy purchased two pendants which hold some of little Caylee’s ashes.

Casey Wearing Pendant Containing Caylee's Ashes

Due to our privacy policy I cannot confirm that she purchased the cremation jewelry from Cremation Solutions. She waited two years to give it to Casey and asked her first if she would wear it. The two made a pact to always wear the identical pendants to honor the memory of Caylee. Here at Cremation Solutions we know this is not an unusual way of families using keepsakes like jewelry that holds ashes to connect survivors to share in their grief.

Reading the latest news on the subject though, I noticed the media has portrayed the wearing of what they are calling an ashes necklace as some kind of freakish invention of this bizarre family. Here at Cremation Solutions we know that this is far from the truth. Our experience tells us that our many customers that purchase our jewelry for ashes, can’t thank us enough. It’s how I know how important and cherished the jewelry becomes. I can’t count how many times I’ve been told how comforting the jewelry is, and how many never take it off.

I guess I just wanted to point out that there are many in our society that still have never heard of cremation jewelry and find the idea of wearing it a bit strange. I must say that even I thought it was a strange new fad when as a funeral director I started selling cremation jewelry 15 years ago. After one former client approached me months later in the supermarket to thank me for helping her through the funeral of her husband, she began to speak softly. A warm glow came over her face as she opened her blouse to reveal the fish pendant I sold her, as she whispered he’s always with me. I never questioned the jewelry again as a new gimmick to make a sale. The people I have served over the years constantly remind me of the importance of their most cherished piece of jewelry. For some people the Idea is just too much. It’s these people that I now recommend fingerprint Jewelry, which is a one of a kind pendant or rings, faced with the actual fingerprint of our loved one. The fingerprint Jewelry is equally cherished and shared amongst family members.

Murder or not we all need to heal. I think it was a very thoughtful gesture of her mom to gift her the necklace. Family is family you only have one. It took a long time for her mom to give it, the healing will not erase the scared life Casey lives. What strange is that the media acts like the cremation jewelry is some strange family creation. Cremation Jewelry is purchased and worn by thousands of Americans every year and is widely available at funeral homes and online at www.cremationsolutions.com

How do you feel about people wearing cremation jewelry and jewelry made from a fingerprint. We’d love to hear your thoughts.

In the UK and the USA Every Funeral Home Has a Room for Unclaimed Cremation Ashes

Unclaimed cremation ashes sitting in storage.

Why are so many ashes being left at the funeral home? Here at Cremation Solutions, we believe that the funeral directors who are making arrangements are not going into enough depth with families as to the final disposition of their loved one’s ashes. The question is WHY?! Do you see rooms full of caskets waiting for families to make a decision? Of course not.  It would be illegal and a health hazard. With urns of ashes though, funeral directors tend to be lax in finding a home for them.  Then, they get bothered as the urns of ashes pile up. If they would just talk about the ashes and all the options available, such as cremation or keepsake jewelry in addition to traditional urns, as well as doing a little follow up with the family, we believe that the storage problem can be avoided and the survivors granted the piece of mind they need deserve. When cremation ashes are left in urns at the funeral home it can cause unresolved grief. The longer you wait the harder it becomes to deal with.  As time goes on, what could have been a ceremony turns into disposal.

What happens to uncollected ashes?

Feed Me To The Wind (Caleb Parkin Producer)

With more people being cremated rather than buried after death, ash-scattering ceremonies are gaining in popularity. But what happens when it doesn’t go according to plan – or if no-one collects the remains?

There is a moment in the film The Big Lebowski where the Dude (Jeff Bridges) and Walter (John Goodman) take their late friend Donny’s ashes to a cliff top. Walter insists on saying “a few words”, then scatters Donny’s mortal remains from a giant coffee cup.

But prevailing winds mean that Donny, instead of ending up in the “Pacific Ocean, which he loved so well”, ends up all over the Dude.

For a meaningful, solemn occasion to be unexpectedly blown off course is a real and increasing phenomenon. We want to say the right words, in the right place, at the right moment and with all the right people in attendance. But it doesn’t always go according to plan.

Adam Heath, a funeral director from Sheffield, has noticed a shift in how the bereaved treat ashes during his 30-year career.

“It used to be that everyone was scattered at the garden of remembrance [at] the crematorium,” he says. Now, as fictional depictions of ash-scattering are more common, they prefer to take the ashes to a location with personal significance for the deceased. “They would like to be able to do their own thing, too.”

Although some 70% of Britons will be cremated, few specify what they would like done with their remains. Those left behind have to make an educated guess.

“One minute he’s your dad, then the next you’ve got this urn – plastic and disappointing,” says Sally, of Bristol. “You want to do it poetically, like in the movies, but there’s always more of it. And, in the end, you’re like ‘Oh, just tip him out.'”

Kevin Browne, bereavement services manager for Broxstowe Borough Council, says it is part of our national psyche to be surprised by ashes.

“We’re so British, we don’t talk about death, do we? People aren’t aware of the options they’ll have – they haven’t given it any thought at all.

“On TV you just see a token gesture [amount] being scattered – a couple of egg cupfuls. The quantity and weight seem to catch people off guard.”

And that’s if the ashes are even collected.

Funeral directors up and down the country have a room of unclaimed ashes. These can range from tens to hundreds of ashes, some of which date from the late 19th Century. Uncertainty about what to do with these remains is certainly a factor.

Scattering the Ashes of GandI

Gandhi’s ashes – held in secret for decades by a family friend – were scattered in 2010. Many families wait a considerable length of time pondering just the right way on how to scatter ashes. Ashes do not belong to anyone, in the same way as a person cannot belong to another under British law. Ashes will be returned to whoever made the funeral arrangements, not necessarily the next of kin.

Nor do funeral directors press the issue with the recently bereaved, says Heath.

“It’s important, to arrange someone’s funeral, to get some insight into their psyche, to get what’s right for them at the time. But what they want to do with the ashes, collecting them or not, I don’t want to take sides or pick a fight.”

Until recently, there was scant advice for funeral directors on what to do with unclaimed ashes.

In December, the National Association of Funeral Directors published guidelines stating that unclaimed ashes must be stored for at least five years, with efforts being made to locate the rightful recipient, before a funeral company could dispose of them. This includes scattering ashes with a scattering urn in a garden of remembrance or at a beauty spot. Some scattering urns will convert into a memorial birdhouse where life will continue. Always get the landowner’s permission when scattering – or interring them.

Douglas Davies, of the Centre for Death and Life Studies at Durham University, says even Britons who are not religious want to mark a loved one’s passing in a way that reflects that person’s values and preferences.

“In the Christian idea, people thought you would gain a new identity in heaven. But with a decrease in this idea, this ‘looking back’ [at a person’s past] came on – and there were the cremated remains as a symbol.”

Sasha Baron Cohen "The Dictator" Scatters Ashes on the Red Carpet

But death and human remains can have shock value, as the comedian Sacha Baron Cohen showed at last month’s Oscars ceremony. Carrying an urn emblazoned with the image of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, he began scattering the ashes on the red carpet, claiming this to be the dying wish of the leader – who, incidentally, had portrayed himself as a film buff. Security did not take kindly to the gesture.

But fulfilling one’s identity through their ashes is what many hope to do. Famously, journalist Hunter S Thompson’s ashes were fired into the sky – as per his wishes – in a giant firework, paid for by his friend Johnny Depp.

Others want their ashes turned into cremation jewelery or even cremation diamonds . Many get comfort by keeping the ashes home in a simple cremation urns – or perhaps scattered from a specially designed plane.

So the choice is yours. Or at least, it should be.
